Skandino FAQ
Skandino's products don't necessarily have age restrictions at all, but many of our products do offer benefits for different ages.
Our kid's tableware set (incl. Spoon, Spoutless Sippy Cup and Plate) is designed for children aged 4-48 months. These designs have been found benefical for adults and elderly people, too!
Once your child has learned to drink from the cup, the lid can be left out and the cup can be used for years to come.
Yes, Si and Absolutely! The child can throw Skandino tablewares across the floor without worry – they won’t break. The life cycle of tablewares is at least as long as that of your child, you, and/or any traditional plastic products. 😉
All Skandino products have passed the official EU physical and mechanical properties of children’s drinking equipment and children’s cutlery and feeding utensils (EN 14350 & EN 14372) in an accredited laboratory, in addition to Japan's Official food safety tests and regulations.
Yes you can! All Skandino’s products are dishwasher safe. That's the thing!
It's a yes, here, too!
Common sense is to be followed with the use of microwave: Skandino dishwares must not be used in the microwave without food. The material contains natural fibers and therefore the products may deform slightly after micrwave use in cases where no food content is placed for heating. For this reason, we do strongly advise against the use of the microwave when the dish is empty — just like with any other piece of tableware.
Rule of thumb: heat up the food, not the utensils!
All products are made from ecological biocomposite using a minimum of 94% plant-based raw materials — a mix of pinewood- and sugar cane-based biomagic! More on the material here.
Yyyup! Absolutely yes. We’ve invested in a lot of (voluntary) research beyond our legal liabilities to make sure the products are 100% safe to use.
The material has been carefully tested many times and it does not contain any harmful chemicals. The material is FREE of BPA, PVC, Phatalate and Melamin. It is 100% safe for children use and complies to the official EU physical and mechanical properties of children’s drinking equipment and children’s cutlery and feeding utensils (EN 14350 & EN 14372)
Hey, lovely question! Yes, absolutely! To read more about the Skandino Partnership Program and apply, head here.
The child can start practicing drinking from a cup at the same time as they start tasting solid foods. A good time to start drinking from a cup is when the child is able to sit firmly. (See source below)
In the early stages of learning the drinking liquid may be, for example, a fluid smoothie. The thicker the liquid is, the easier it is to handle in the mouth and grow a natural, safe swallowing pattern. (See source below)
Later, as fine-motor handling skills develop, less thick liquids may be introduced. Eventually, in the final stage of mastery, the Spoutless Sippy Cup's Cap can be removed from use. Good luck with the final boss! 😉
There may be mess in the beginning - that's usually part of the deal here. However, we designed the Spoutless Sippy Cup's Cap to limit liquid flow and thus minimize the mess n' stress.
On top of that, with consistent training, your child will learn to control a cup in just a few weeks! (See source below)
Pinch the edge of the lid with your index finger and thumb and pull the lid straight up. The cup has no threads so that it can be used as a regular drinking cup after the child has first learned to control the liquid and drink independently with the training lid.
(*The lack of threads contributes to a avoiding unnatural positions of tongue in the process of drinking, and thus, builds healthy swallowing patterns)
Does the lid feel like a strength test? Dang, we just wanted to keep it shut from the kids, but let's solve it.
The cup and lid are made of bio-based material that contains wood. Wood is an organic ingredient, because of which the tightness of the lid and cup can live a little. The lid finds it's natural fit with a couple weeks of use.
Thanks to the wood used in the material, you can carefully sand the lid and cup with sandpaper if you feel that the lid is too tight. But before that, we'd try soaking the cup + lid into water for 10 hours to allow for the nautral materials find a balance in temperature and humidity.
The products have a slight scent of wood, because their material is made of sugarcane and pinewood-based materials, which is collected from the side streams of industry.
After a few washes, the scent of wood starts to fade away.
Like all non-ceramic dishes, Skandinos may take a little color from strongly coloring foods, such as tomato sauce, especially if the food is heated in the microwave and/or if it contains preservatives, artifical colors or other additives.
However, any possible stains fade with each wash and likely disappear completely. If not, try a quick wash with vinegar!
Is your Spoutless Sippy Cup’s lid/cap loose? Oh noes! But don’t worry, we’ll figure it out.
It’s not unlikely for natrual materials to adapt to it’s surroundings’ temperature and humidity (much like wood would do). However, the Spoutless Sippy Cup’s cap should always be a good fit despite this — never too tight and never too loose. In case you haven’t washed your products for the first time yet, always give them a run in the dishwasher first. This would ensure that both parts, the cap and the cup itself, are under exactly the same humidity and temperature.
If that doesn’t help, you’ll want to soak the lid in water for at least 10 hours (24 hours may be necessary. You can check the fit of the lid from time to time during the process.)
If you end up, despite these tests, with an unfitting Lid-Cup combo, please contact us immediately. You’ll find our contact info below. It might be, that the pressure/humidity/temperature have drastically changed during production and this natural effect is thus reflected, unluckily, on your product.
Don’t worry, we’ll work it out for you and make things right!
Oh you're already done using them? Okaaay!
If your products are still good for use, we'll of course recommend gifting or selling them on to the next tiny user! 🧡
The most efficient way to recycle your old Skandino's (even if broken), is by sending them back to us, so we can mold them into new products. See recycling guide here or just contact us directly!
Alternatively, you can extend the life of the tablewares by inventing new uses for them – share your ideas on social media and DM us (@skandino_official) your ideas!
The story of Skandino begins in 2014, when the world of baby products was heavily focused around using plastic as a material. No other materials seemed to be available.
Our founder Emmi, working as a volunteer on Middle-American islands, came across an astounding view: while the locals ate their meal from dried peels of coconuts and other fruits, the waves of the ocean pushed plastic waste of the rest of the world, on to the island's shore. This unforgettable sight sparked the idea of greener tableware design and baby products.
The industry turned out to have more to fix than just the materials. Many speech language pathologists worldwide began to criticize traditional sippy cups because of oral-motor problems caused by them. Healthy design choices was another issue that Skandino wanted to address.
